Digital Property Rights:-

My dear boys, have you seen any option on YouTube from where you can download the physical file of any video.

No, its not there...
Although there is an option in YouTube to download a video but that, you must have seen, it doesn't allow you to play the video outside the YouTube app.

Why is there so much of rigidity?

You will be able to answer the above question, if you try to answer the following question...

Suppose you have created a YouTube channel, then would you like someone else to use your videos to earn goodwill and money without giving you the due credit?

The answer is a big NO....

Because no one wants to allow any other person to use her/his creation  (Intellectual Property) without seeking permission.

Therefore, videos available on YouTube channels are the property of the owners of the channels.

Since, the content of this nature, spread over the cyber space, is of digital nature, we can call it as Digital Property.

The owner of such Digital Properties have some Rights too...

So basically...

  • Digital Intellectual property refers to the ownership of ideas, designs, symbols, writings and and creations that exist in digital form, both online and offline.
  • In includes digital media such as audio and video clips that can be downloaded online.

For uploading videos on YouTube or sending emails, for doing e-shopping or involving in the e-commerce business, we need an account with the companies which provides such services. These companies are called service  providers.
If you have made any such account, then you must have said yest to 'I Agree' section. Basically it is contract in between you and the service provider, that governs your account.

Following the list of some different types of such Internet Accounts:
  • E-mail account
  • Accounts at Financial Institutions
  • Accounts on shopping websites
  • Web page
  • Blog Hosting account
  • Social Networking account
  • Registered domain names
  • Online video games and virtual world accounts.
Content uploaded on these accounts, by their owners, is called the Digital Property of the owner.

When you use the word property, it gets directly connected to the rights of owner of such property.

Owner of Digital Property enjoys Digital Property Rights...

Digital Property rights include rights related to data (documents, spreadsheets, pictures, audio files, movies), Internet accounts and other rights in the digital world.

Digital Rights includes the following:
  • Right to freedom of expression
  • Right to privacy
  • Right to credit for personal works
  • Right to digital access
  • Right to our identity

Gentlemen, no rights in this world comes without responsibilities. We are required to be ready to accept the responsibilities as a collateral part of rights.

Therefore we need to understand that along with Digital Rights we have some Digital Responsibilities too.

Let us read them one by one:
  1. Responsibility to report bullying, harassing, sexting or identity theft: If you feel that you are being harassed by someone by the means of cyber bullying or identity theft, then it becomes your responsibility to report it to the concerned authorities.

  2. Responsibility to cite works used for resources and researching: We have studied plagiarism in depth in our previous blogs. This responsibility has come from their only. In case we are required to use the content of someone's intellectual property then we should don't miss to cite it properly.

  3. Responsibility to download music, videos, and other material legally: One should be very careful while downloading and using digital material. We should download music, videos or other material, only from those sites which have legal rights and ownership on the content downloaded by us from them.

  4. Responsibility to model and teach student's expectations of the use of technology: Delivery of knowledge to set correct expectations of the use of technology.

  5. Responsibility to keep data /information safe from hackers: Keeping data and information of people or organisations associated with you, like your customers, should be kept safe from hackers.

  6. Responsibility not to falsify our identity in any way: Using false name, gender or age is very common in social media. But boys remember, we should not do it. It is against law. It is our responsibility to present our true identity only.
